What not to put in your dishwasher

After a big, hearty meal, you’re ready to tackle those dishes.  But, wait a minute.  Not everything should go into the dishwasher.

Some items will get ruined if you don’t clean them the old-fashioned way.  The Powell Group can help you figure it out.

    1. Knives can dull in the dishwasher.  You may not realize it, but the heavy washing within the machine can ruin your blade.  Instead, wash them by hand with the blade facing outward.  Then wipe them with a towel.

    2. Insulated thermoses can crack.  Almost everyone carries one of them around to have their coffee ready-to-go.  But, don’t put them in the dishwasher.  The heavy cycles required to clean items will crack them, which in effect ruins the whole purpose.
    3. Cutting boards should also be washed by hand.  It’ll help avoid warping.
    4. Anything made of cast iron should stay out of the dishwasher.  As you may have guessed by now, the dishwasher may get rid of those hard to clean stains, but it’ll get ruined by the machine.  Don’t use a scouring pad either.  You’re likely to scratch the pan’s surface rendering it useless – even dangerous.
