    Maintenance skills you should know

Owning a home is a great step in a person’s life.  It gives you freedom that you didn’t have before, and it can be used to build equity.  However, that’s only true if you maintain your house well.

Sure, you can call someone, but that will cost you money that you probably don’t have to spend.  This is just a small list of the things you should know.

    1. Cleaning gutters can be a dirty job, but – as the old saying goes – “somebody has to do it.”  With all the storms that we’ve had, you most likely have had a lot of wind as well.  Therefore, it is a good idea to check your gutters.  It may be a hassle, but the flooding you can prevent from clogged gutters will definitely be worth it in the end.
    2. Unclogging drains can be just as unpleasant.  However, it is a necessary evil that you can do yourself quite easily.  Your typical liquid drain cleaner, which can be found in your local supermarket – can easily do most jobs.  However, for the tougher ones, you may need to use a drain snake.  No, we don’t mean a “real” snake.  You can find one in any plumbing section of your hardware store.

    3. Knowing how to turn off the water can be important.  Below most sinks, you will find at least one valve – possibly to for each temperature.  The valves may also be in your basement.  Locating them is essential.  People who have dealt with hurricanes know that bad storms can affect the pipes, but they can also be affected.  It should also be turned off if you are doing any work on the plumbing.
    4. Changing the air filter is important for air quality.  As many people know, the filter is there to catch any dust or other allergens.  However, depending on your area, the filter can be filled up quickly, which may cause those allergens to get past the filter.  Anyone with respiratory issues will tell you that’s not a good thing.  Therefore, it is essential to change the filter at least once every month.  Doing so will allow for cleaner air in your home.  However, the added benefit will be a lower utility bill since the HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard.
