Keep Anderson County Beautiful is helping to clean up our streets. They are an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. The national organization’s mission is “to inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.” They have several affiliates nationwide with many programs and initiatives.
Our local affiliate, Keep Anderson County Beautiful, has helped by inviting volunteers to pick up litter. According to Frances Parrish of the Anderson Independent Mail, volunteers from all walks of life continue to help.
“[Sandra] Ray works for JCPenney in the Anderson Mall, and April is a time when employees of that company do volunteer work,” Parrish said. “Cleaning up the roadside caught her eye among the opportunities presented to her. So Ray decided to wake up early on her day off from JCPenney to join the cleanup.”
A local environmental agency also has a reason to take notice of the project.
“Anderson County Solid Waste Director Greg Smith’s goal is to pick up 1,500 bags in April,” Parrish said. “Last year 1,114 bags of trash were collected as a result of the cleanup.”
Smith also points to how our roads can affect business prospects and the possible growth of our area.
“It can affect economic development,” Smith said. “It’s a health hazard, and a good look at the roads can affect a strong company coming in.”
If there’s one thing we can take from this information it’s that littering diminishes from the beauty of our neighborhoods. After all, no one wants to move to an uninviting area.
