For those that have a sweet tooth, this is your day! Today is National Donut Day! It’s the one day where you can get out and get a free donut at many local donut shops.
According to USA Today, National Donut Day was started by the Salvation Army around the time of World War I after they served donuts to soldiers. Today the favorite treat is enjoyed by millions of people.
But, what can you do to celebrate in the Upstate? That’s easy. Two of your favorite donut shops are letting you have one donut for free.
At Krispy Kreme, they’ve made it even easier by not requiring a purchase. However, they do ask that you donate.
According to the Krispy Kreme website, “Customers are encouraged to donate to The Salvation Army’s miniature Red Kettles stationed at the registers of participating Krispy Kreme locations. All donations will support the local communities where the donation was made. ”
The Salvation Army explains that it started after “Donut Girls” served the treat during wartime, and soldiers came home looking for it.
