While the Western Upstate of South Carolina was spared from most of the hurricane damage, many of our neighbors to the East – especially Charleston – were not. Even the Western Upstate had some rain damage. So, now that we’ve survived the storm, what do we do next?
The Powell Group at Keller Williams of the Western Upstate of South Carolina has several suggestions for you. Following these steps will ensure that any damage your home has suffered will be fixed in a short amount of time.
First – even before you call anyone to fix your house – take pictures. Don’t just take pictures of one small area, though. Take pictures of everything. Take pictures of all the damage that occurred in – and around – your house. Better yet, you should also take video. That way, you can display a moving picture with narration that will show what’s going on. You will have the proof you need to show your insurance company. Having these pictures will visually show just how serious your damage is, and they are more likely to communicate with your quicker.
Next, cover up and protect and broken parts. The last thing you need is more damage to the already broken areas of your home.
Once you have the video and pictures, and have protected everything, is when you should call your insurance company. You can also email them or send private messages through social media. The sooner they see the damage, the better. However, be prepared to wait and be patient. Your neighbors are going through the same thing, and they may have the same insurance company. Be patient, but be persistent. Do not let the fact that they are taking more time to answer be an excuse to give up. Don’t! Just know that they will answer your claim as soon as possible.
Our team members at The Powell Group can also help. If you need a contractor to fix your home, we can put you in contact with someone who will work with you to get your house back in pre-hurricane condition.
Lastly, keep track of everything. All communication and services should be documented. Do not let a conversation go by without getting the person’s name and direct line if possible. Getting that information will help you if there is a delay because you will be able to identify who you spoke to and what was said.
The Powell Group encourages you to be diligent and patient throughout the post-hurricane process. We are aware that tempers are short because patience is thin. However, our team members have the answers you need to get through this event.
