For homeowners, it’s become part of your routine. Place your garbage cart outside in preparation for trash removal. But, what happens when you leave your cart outside for longer than one day?
If you live in Anderson, you could soon have to pay up.
According to Kirk Brown of the Independent Mail, the City Council initially approved an ordinance that would “impose fines on residents who repeatedly leave garbage carts along streets for longer than a day after trash is collected.”
The penalties would be as follows:
First offense – Given a warning
Second offense – $10 fine
Third offense – $25 fine
For those that dislike these fines, take heed. Repeat offenders could receive a $500 fine or a 30-day jail sentence.
While the penalties may seem steep, there is something to be said for them. Littering was discussed in a recent blog, which mentioned big fines for littering. While leaving a cart may not be considered littering at first, letting it stay outside for several days can cause problems for your neighbors. After all, these carts held the trash you prepared for pickup. Every little thing we can do to keep our neighborhood beautiful, like putting away our carts after the trash is taken, is always appreciated by our neighbors.
